-During my weekend reading I came across an article in Help Net Security. The article was entitled Shadow IT: Security Policies May be a Problem and you can find the article at:

The article opens with a bold statement: “3 out of 4 workers use personal (and often unmanaged) phones and laptops for work and nearly half of companies let unmanaged devices access protected resources…” This is pretty astonishing. I cannot say that I have seen that level of exposure. Still BYOD is very popular due to the costs associated with managing corporate issued devices. We typically see this type of ‘allowance’ in mobile devices such as cell phones.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) is one way of handling these devices but users are typically reluctant to have corporate control of personal devices and the personal applications that might be associated with them. (I have my own personal story to go with this if we ever bump into each other.)

Mobile Threat Detection (MTD) is a different approach where threats are monitored for: think rooted devices or malware errantly downloaded that reach out to know bad locations or perhaps something as simple as the absence of a locking mechanism pin or biometric or other behaviors.

If a threat is detected then alert the user and prevent access to the application. If one was to compare the approaches MDM vs MTM there is quite a bit of overlap but still the coverage is better when used together. But if you must choose one (particularly when faced with users not allowing MDM) MTD is a very good option. Most recognize the need for strong authentication (MFA or FIDO) to protect the organization.
